For anyone who found themselves on the receiving end of mysterious events that had no explanation, the cause was my Inmate, Merope Gaunt. She didn't harm anyone intentionally. I had the Admiral return her magic to her as a necessary step on her path to graduation, and I didn't anticipate the control problems that would follow. My apologies to anyone who was injured. If you have issues, problems, or concerns, please take them up with me, as it was my decision to return her magic that ultimately lead to what happened. Her magic is now limited until she can learn how to control it.

Merope informed me that she used a Memory Charm on you. You were her friend, and she panicked. She didn't want you to remember what was happening. I don't know what the extent of the damage was, because Merope was not in control of her magic at the time the charm was cast. If you're forgetting things, this is the reason. I'm sorry that this happened before I figured out what was going on.

Merope has informed me that she performed a Memory Charm on your Inmates. She wanted to make them forget, because they were her friends and she couldn't stop what was happening. Uncontrolled Memory Charms have very little chance of being reversed. I wouldn't even try to do so, because the risk of doing more damage is far greater than the chance of a successful reversal. I've informed Lua and Dracula. If there's anything more you want me to do, please let me know.

How can you be certain it was her? Mysterious events that have no explanation happen quite frequently here.

For instance: I constantly find myself beginning the washing with a pair of socks, and completing it with only a single sock. And there's simply nowhere they could have gone to.

That's an excellent point. I can say for almost absolute certain that she had nothing to do with your disappearing socks.

She panicked and did something, she didn't intentionally seek to fuck with Lua's mind. I'm being bloody calm because losing my bloody head isn't going to fix anything. Of course I care about what she's done. I've had my own mind buggered with, intentionally, and I know the difference between that and what Merope has done.

I've limited her magic. If I take it away entirely, that's a reward, because she doesn't want it. She can't graduate without it. She's lost her few friends, as they no longer remember her. Feel free to kill her and lose your deal, because that's all you're going to gain. She doesn't care about her life, either.

If Lua feels that Merope should be punished, then she can talk to me and we'll work out a punishment.

Also, I wouldn't talk to anyone about coddling their inmates if you get this bloody deranged over an accident.

[Losing memories is a huuuuge trigger for her. It happened to her once during an event and she's never handled it, even though she got them back.]

She panicked and tried to erase what was happening, erase the memory, erase what she could. It was not a coherent, thought out, planned or malicious attack. It was the first thing she told me when I found her, once I could understand words beneath the shaking and the sobbing. I believe her exact words were 'I made them forget me, my friends.' If she was doing an intentional Memory Charm, precise and very specific memories would have been taken. That isn't what happened.

If she ever breathes within three feet of anyone again, I'll be impressed. Your threat is duly noted.

This may sound incredibly strange, but I think I owe her thanks. The memories I lost were burdensome to me to a great extreme.

Certainly I am not angry at her; she was clearly having some kind of attack. But I'm...a bit worried. She is so timid normally. I do not want her thinking that I am angry with her and fleeing me.

I'm glad that it worked out for you, in the end, but I'm still sorry that it happened. I'm sorry that you both were put into that position. If there's anything I can do, please let me know.

She's scared of her own magic, but I really hope, in time, that she'll become more comfortable with her magic, and herself. I rather you not thank her, as that confuses things a bit, but please feel free to tell her you aren't angry and that you understand. I know she was most devastated by the memory incidents.

I understand. It is forgiven, in any case. I have been backreading the Network and reconstructing what I lost, so I am not actually missing any information anymore. Merely...the emotional connection to that information.

I appreciate you being so understanding. I know making friends isn't easy for Merope.

It's not easy for me, for that matter. But that's probably deserved, and in her case...there's no way it could be. The look on her face sometimes reminds me of me in my darkest moods. If it will help keep her from tumbling into...that...again, I am more than willing to offer her an extra measure of patience. Besides, I like her. She reminds me a little of Elphaba.

I'd like to offer my assistance in helping her learn control. I've had students with similar issues before, and had a fair share of my own, back when my mutant ability began developing.

I had noticed my inmate showing signs of memory alteration. When I suggested that it might be possible to reverse it with time and expert psychic help, he seemed utterly uninterested in the prospect. Luckily she picked a rare person who appears not to feel violated by such mental tampering.

Do keep your inmate out of other people's minds from now on.
