[His voice is a bit...odd. It's overly cheerful, quite obviously fake.]

[Filtered to Inmates]

Do you think everything about the Barge is a test? Every last moment? Do you think it purposefully puts the most horrid, rancid, despicable things on board just to screw with you?

[Private to Severus]

Hello, Snivellus. Why is your evil arse skulking about, allowed to draw breath, when so many good people are dead?

Wichita said I would be tested. Better you than the rat. But stay away from me. I don't need one of Voldemort's minions to remind me of what he did to James and Lily and what he tried to do to Harry.

How do you live with yourself?

[Private to Wichita]

You knew Snivellus was on board and you didn't tell me. Thanks. I could have ran right into his ugly face in a corridor and then what?

[Private to Merlin]

I hear you're a wizard. Why didn't you tell me?

You won't be kicked off the ship. The inmates have no choice but to remain aboard.

[He just watches for a moment after that comment. This is a side of Black he hasn't seen before; the other man's defenses are down, perhaps.]

This - [He motions vaguely at the camera, indicating their conversation.] - has nothing to do with your time in Azkaban. Do you suppose I would make mention of something so trivial?

[Sirius doesn't know about the second war. It strikes him suddenly, and he frowns and leans back in his chair. He continues guardedly:]

Minion?

[He files away that Severus Snape has said inmates have no choice but to remain on the Barge, but it's still something he's going to bring up with Wichita. Because, as with everything else on this rust bucket, he has no way of knowing what is the truth and what is a trick.]

Trivial. [He spits out the word and barks out a laugh.] You would think so, having never been there yourself. I'm not referring to my time in Azkaban. I am referring to the entire wizarding world thinking I betrayed the Potters. I am referring to the universe believing I killed the rat and all those muggles. I don't care anymore. Harry seems to figure it out somehow, he wouldn't name his son after me otherwise.

[His gaze rolls toward the screen.] Yes, your minion. Mozenrath. He's been out to get me since day one. Has that been fun for you? I didn't know who he was, I didn't know you were here. And he seems to know so many lovely things about me. He even called me dog-boy. Isn't that fun?

[He latches on to that first sentence and holds on to it like a bulldog. Suddenly, he snaps angrily, interrupting the bit about Mozenrath:]

You have no idea who I am or what I've been through. Don't presume to stake any claim to having borne the most suffering when you know nothing about our respective futures.

Your time in Azkaban was trivial. Your supposed crime was trivial. The world didn't care about you as long as you lived, Black. It had other, more horrific concerns.

[A beat, as he tries to get himself under control.]

Don't play the martyr. The Barge has no place for them, and our world has more than enough.

My crime was trivial? [There is murder in his eyes now. They're small and black and shiny and if he could reach through the screen and throttle Severus, he would.] My crime was trivial. My crime was trivial. James and Lily Potter were not trivial, nor was the crime of their betrayal and murder trivial acts. And to think, she used to defend you.

[He shakes his head and clucks his tongue.] Poor Severus. Someone, please feel bad for me! Look at me, I'm suffering! Yet you accuse me of playing martyr, Well, I'm not. James and Lily are martyrs. The rest of the Order that died, they are the martyrs. Every good witch and wizard you and your kind killed, they are the martyrs. I'm just a dumb chap in a Barge looking to turn a few things around. And I'll be here as long as it takes for me to do that. Years and years and years if that's what's required. I've got time to burn.

Black, your involvement was trivial. Your suffering was trivial. You are trivial. We all are.

If your intention is to remain here and bring them back -

[A look of genuine frustration and what might - might - be sorrow crosses his face, but it's gone quickly. It's not like he didn't consider this at one point.]

You can't change the course of a history already set in stone. The results would be catastrophic for everyone except - [He just looks bitter and disgusted now.] - my kind.

[He folds his arms over his chest, looking every inch the petulant child. What he may or may not be able to do for James is still a fragile soap bubble, and he doesn't want Severus Snape poking at it with his greasy fingers and breaking it. Because he really can't live if that hope isn't there. He just...can't.]

The fact that I'm here tells me nothing is set in stone. Why would it be so catastrophic? [He isn't going there in his mind, about how Harry lived with only that scar, with no sign of Voldemort. He was arrested too soon after the fact to know the full implications of it. Voldemort was after the baby and the baby lived, but he isn't going there. Whether this is a conscious decision of a stubborn mind or otherwise.]

I am fully capable of using my head, when I want to use it. [He rolls his eyes, trying for his usual flippant THIS IS SILLY AND BORING, but he answers the question. His voice is matter-of-fact and void of expression, as if he were reading off a shopping list.] He killed James in the living room. He killed Lily in Harry's bedroom. She was dead in front of his crib. Harry lived with only that scar on his forehead to show he was hit in any way.

[Oh, good. He does have half a functioning brain. It's Snape's turn to recite back what happened as though reading a shopping list.]

He was gone, as you so succinctly put it, because Lily gave her life for her son. Potter - Harry - was protected by the love involved in that sacrifice.

[A beat. He swallows hard and glances away, having a slow look around the room - one which ends again at his hand on the desk. Finally:]

If you save her, everything changes.

[A furrow appears between his brows. There hadn't been time to reason out why Voldemort had failed in killing Harry. He had assumed it had been something about Harry. Something special. He was the child of prophecy, after all. Never in a million years could he have guessed that it was only because Lily had died for him. She had been right there. Within reach of the crib. She had been standing right there, shielding him, when Voldemort entered the room.

He chewed on his lip. Shouldn't Snape want this to change? If Voldemort had been well and truly gone, all because of that sacrifice, shouldn't he want him to bring back James and Lily? Then it was back to war, back to fighting, back to Death Eaters vs. the Order. And Voldemort would be there, as strong as ever. As unstoppable as ever.

He looked away. He had to know. Because this didn't make any sense, and if he was going take a word of this for truth, there was a question he needed answered. Whether Snape would answer it or not was beyond his control. He returned his gaze to the screen.]

Everything changes, and you don't want everything to change. Which begs the question - Why would you want Voldemort to stay dead?

[There are a million answers to that question which would no doubt interest Sirius - and every one of them provided him with ammunition.]

Why, indeed. If you know me as you believe you do - if I am the person you think I am, I would have much to gain. After all, I would want both his return and hers.

And yet the least likely person is telling you not to attempt to change the course of history.

[Flatly:]

I does make one wonder, doesn't it?

[For some reason, making Black speechless isn't as much of a triumph as it used to be. It might be the subject matter, but then again.

He doesn't know how much to tell the other man, or whether he wants to tell him anything at all.]

You are correct in one instance: I do know a good deal about that night in Godric's Hollow. I know she was never meant to die. I tried -

[He stops abruptly. No. Sirius doesn't get to know how he tried to save the Potters.]

Lily chose her fate. She sacrificed herself and it saved our world.

[A beat.]

You have a good, long while to decide who and what you are willing to sacrifice: our world or your friend. Weigh not only what you would want, but what Potter would have wanted. Consider that I have been here as both an inmate and warden, and while the whole of it is absolutely none of your bloody business, my deal with the Admiral has nothing to do with Lily Potter.

I suggest you learn all you can before you make a decision you may well regret.
